VEAC_Assessment of Victoria’s coastal reserves, coastline 2020

A spatial dataset representing the nominal, persistent coastline at 0 metre and 0.5 metre Australian Height Datum (AHD) referenced contours. VEAC adjusted the “Vic_Coastline_2008” dataset to create an integrated and continuous coastline. Manual edits were necessary in areas where offshore islands were missing from the dataset and where smaller rock stacks were connected as mainland peninsulas. In the western part of the state, the zero contour was largely incomplete, so the 0.5-meter contour was utilized instead. These contour intervals reference the Australian Height Datum (AHD) maintained by Geoscience Australia. In areas lacking LIDAR data and photography, linework at alternative scales was used (including for internal state boundaries). To ensure completeness, VEAC has included a coastline (or shoreline) for the Gippsland Lakes, which is not included in the Vic_Coastline_2008 dataset. The coastline within the Gippsland Lakes was created by adapting information provided by Gippsland Ports. The data provided by Gippsland Ports were prepared using various high-resolution aerial imagery datasets and manually digitised to approximate mean water mark. This information has been integrated with the ocean shoreline mapping to create VEAC’s spatial dataset. Additional information about the coastline can be found in the VEAC’s Assessment of Victoria’s Coastal Reserves Final Report 2020, https://www.veac.vic.gov.au/investigations-assessments/previous-assessments/investigation/assessment-of-victoria-s-coastal-reserves.
